Trail Work Update
Current Trail Work
Hard to believe summer is over, the last few weeks have been busy! Alyssa and Zach spent time with IMBA in the classroom and out in the field brushing up on skills and learning new trail techniques. After IMBA was in town they headed down to Bryce Canyon to attend the Utah Outdoor Recreation Summit where they met people across the state working in the recreation industry. It was a great event to discuss issues and solutions to challenges we are all facing.

Trail Crew has been busy playing in the clay and rocks in the Art Nord area. On Middle Fork trail they went after the worst segments of trail, segments that were cupped 12-18" deep. In working this area they were able to eliminate the cupping and return the trail back to trail bench, with added drainage to protect the the trail for years to come.

Utah Outdoor Recreation Summit
Last week Trail Crew and Executive Director Aric Manning, represented TFNU at the Utah Outdoor Recreation Summit in Bryce. This summit is an annual event that gathers non- profits and businesses alike to have conversations about how our outdoor recreation use impacts the economy, local communities, and overall health of Utahns. There were also representatives from state and federal agencies like the DNR, USFS, and BLM. The Summit is a platform to share the work we are doing and hope to do and the community that’s at the heart of what we do.

What to Have on Trails During Winter
If you are new to using winter trails, you may be wondering how to prepare differently from when using the trails in during the warmer seasons. Trails are open 365 days a year unless otherwise marked and can be just as enjoyable in winter as they are the rest of the year. A peaceful blanket of snow covering a stunning Utah landscape is something everyone ought to experience at least once. From snowmobiling to backcountry skiing, and hiking there are countless ways to enjoy our frigid wonderland. But winter trail use might seem a bit intimidating if you haven’t done it before.

Joshua Bryant Bags All Four Peaks in One Day!
This Peak Challenge has been so awesome for us here at the TFNU office! We love the positive energy that is surrounding this whole challenge. But I think what gets us the most over here is all the photos of smiling faces at the top of a bagged peak. We can’t help but feel that same enthusiasm and joy. It’s contagious and we are loving it! We are looking forward to the Trail Mixer in Fall when we get to celebrate all together and exchange our stories.

David Hartwig has been a supporting member of TFNU for the past 3 years. Originally from Ann Arbor, Michigan, he has been in Utah for almost exactly 6 years now. An avid biker and hiker, David loves all trails, but is partial to the area around the Art Nord Trailhead. In his opinion, Wheeler Canyon is national-park level beautiful, and that East and Middle Fork are excellent Mountain Bike Trails, while Sardine is “just ridiculous” in terms of the different terrain you go through – from Alpen pine, rock and gorgeous aspen groves.

Rocky Mountain Power – For the Win!!
A huge heartfelt thank you to Rocky Mountain Power for addressing the extreme damage to sections of the Bonneville Shoreline Trail from Spring run-off around the Douglas Street Trailhead area last month. These quick actions helped mitigate damages to residential homes, the Ogden City storm water infrastructure, a canal, and the accompanying reservoir directly below this trail.

Weber River Parkway Update
A big construction project is underway on the Weber River Parkway. You may have noticed all the equipment on the east side of Highway 89 as you travel through Uintah and South Weber, near the mouth of Weber Canyon. Crews are busy installing a tunnel under the highway, in order to create a pedestrian and bicycle connection on the south side of the river. This tunnel is a key component in the parkway, and former mayor Jo Sjoblom and others at South Weber City worked for many years to make it a reality. It is scheduled for completion this summer.

Richard S. White Memorial Dedication and Award Announcement
It was a beautiful brisk morning on Saturday, April 23rd. Earth Day. Before the hustle and bustle of the Ogden Nature Center’s Annual Free Earth Day Community Event, a small ground gathered about a ⅓ of a mile into the Nature Center’s trail at a peaceful junction just before Blackbird pond to dedicate a bench permanently set there in honor our dear friend, TFNU Board Member and long time friend of the trails, Richard S. White.

First Richard S. White Friend of the Trails Award 2022 - Dave Stuart
Last year in February, TFNU lost one of our own. Former Trail Champion and TFNU Board Member, Richard S. White truly was a friend to the trails. His passion for the outdoors was obvious in his early years, as he would work on the building and maintenance of local trails, and later became instrumental in fundraising, as he was one of the few people we knew who, with one call, could find money needed for a particular project or improvement.Richard was also credited as being one of the first to volunteer for almost anything. Richard’s decades of unselfish service helped create Weber County’s outstanding public network of paved pathways and natural surface trails.

Alyssa reports: Last week brought snow back to the mountains, and being skiing maniacs we had to take advantage of one last powder day. We skied almost 2 feet of snow down at Brighton on May 6th, it was excellent! Tuesday brought us back out to the trail where we knocked out a big loop hike through Coldwater Canyon assessing the trail for maintenance needs. There were still a few lingering patches of snow early last week.

Middle Fork and Wheeler’s Creek Update: 8-26-24
Current Trail Work
Met up with Trail Crew Lead, Alyssa to talk about the work they have been doing on Middle Fork and Wheeler’s. They have been working hard to add drainage where there was none and repair the minimal drainage that was. Alyssa, said that in some parts of the trail it was more like a streambed than an actual trail. Now, with the increased drainage these trails will dry much quicker and be more sustainable for years of use. Trail crew wants us to know that.. THEY LOVE ALL the natural features and are trying to keep the natural feel of the trail as much as possible. You aren’t going to see all the added drainage but that doesn’t mean it’s not there. They have kept plenty of rocks for us! If you have been out on these trails, you’ve probably noticed that they are smoother and seemingly wider than before. This is part of the process just like with a new a hair cut.. you got to give it a couple weeks.
