Wow the last two weeks have flown by, and we have kept beyond busy! We have been chipping away at a signage project on the Pleasant View BST, which has consisted of installing sign posts and signage. If anyone knows anything about digging post holes around here, you know it can be a daunting task. A rock bar and post hole digger have been our tools of choice for that project. We also put quite a few hours into preparing our tool trailer. This included sharpening loppers and picks, and making sure everything was in working order.
The week leading up to National Trails Day was a blast! On Tuesday morning Zach and I attended the adaptive trail ride out at North Fork with our friends over at Ogden Adaptive. It was my first experience riding an adaptive bike, and I am impressed by how much skill it takes to pedal and also shift and steer the bike all at once. It was a very cool experience! Tuesday evening was also our first trail work night of the season. We had an awesome group of volunteers come out to the North Ogden Lookout Point and go to town on the overgrown segments of the trail heading towards the South.
Thursday we had Volunteer night #2! This group was smaller than the first volunteer night as we were swinging tools. This night we were able to fix two trail spots that had taken a beating from water running off the North Ogden Divide Road. This included digging out the eroding spots, setting big stones and capping the stones with material harvested from a trail rebench cut, and also packing the soil in to compact it. We also were able to clean up the original entrance of the BST on the North side of the road, and add a few water bars above.
Saturday we celebrated National Trails Day at the Ogden Farmer’s Market, which was a super fun event! It’s always exciting to see how much people care about trails, especially in a setting that is not out on the trails.
Wow, what a fun week. It was great meeting and chatting with a lot of people over the last few weeks, especially the volunteers that came out to work with us. Your help is very much appreciated! As I may have shared with a few people, our next tentative volunteer night will be June 18th, once we lock down the details of what project we will be working on, that will go live on GivePulse so keep your eyes peeled for that.
One last note, we received a last minute request for Trackline to be mowed, so we spent 2 days out there as well, in what Zach calls “clipping & tearing”, or in other words weed trimming and backpack blowing the trail. So that is in prime condition right now.
